G. Kirk Raab, Chairman / CEO

Mr. Raab has served as a member of our board of advisors since July 2000. From January 1990 to July 1995, he served as Genentech's President, Chief Executive Officer and a director. Prior to that, from 1985 to January 1990, Mr. Raab served as Genentech's President, Chief Operating Officer and a director.  Previous positions included President, Chief Operating Officer and a Director of Abbott Laboratories, as well as executive positions with the Beecham Group, A.H. Robins, and Pfizer, Inc. 

Mr. Raab was the founding chairman of the California Healthcare Institute and the inaugural chairman of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).  He is a director of The National Foundation for Science and Technology Medals.

Since leaving Genentech in 1995, he has been involved in over 15 other biotechnology companies, many as chairman. He is also Chairman of Oxford Glycosciences UK Ltd and a director of Applied Imaging Inc. and Director of Connetics Corporation since 1995, as well as four private biotechnology companies. Mr. Raab is a trustee emeritus of Colgate University, an honorary fellow of Exeter College, and a member of the Chancellor's Court of Oxford University, England.

 

Thomas Churchwell, Managing Partner Arch Development Partners

Mr. Churchwell was most recently President and CEO of ARCH Development Corporation, a subsidiary of the University of Chicago, which commercialized technology from the University and Argonne National Laboratory. He was previously President and CEO of Calgene Fresh, Inc., a 1992 start-up company which produced and marketed MacGregor's FLAVR SAVR tomato, the world's first biotech food product. Prior to joining Calgene Fresh, Tom was Vice President of ARCH Development Corporation. Before joining ARCH, he held several senior management positions at the NutraSweet Company, including Vice President, Sales and legal positions at G.D. Searle & Co., American Hospital Supply Corporation, and The Coca-Cola Export Corporation. Tom is a director of a number of start-up companies and charities in the Chicago area. Tom received his B.A. degree from DePauw University and J.D. degree from Northwestern University School of Law. He also is a Graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

 

J. Michael Millis, MD

Dr. Michael Millis, University of Chicago, Department of Surgery, is an expert in adult and pediatric transplant surgery. Dr. Millis serves as Chief, Section of Transplant Surgery; Director, Liver Transplant Program; and Directory, Pediatric Liver Transplant Program.

He has performed more liver transplants than any other surgeon in the region. Dr. Millis has pioneered new techniques of operating on the liver. The liver transplant program headed by Dr. Millis is the largest in the Midwest, having performed more liver transplants than any other program since its establishment in 1984.  Dr. Millis's research explores the application of cellular technology to patient care. 

Dr. Millis received his MD from the University of Tennessee Medical School.  He followed this with a Residency and Fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles.  He holds board certifications in General Surgery and Critical Care. Since 2003, he has chaired both the cGMP Cellular and Tissue Processing Facility Technical Oversight Committee and the cGMP Cellular and Tissue Processing Facility Community Advisory Committee.  Dr. Millis has been listed in America's Top Doctors since 2001.

 

David B. Anderson, General Counsel

Mr. Anderson has more than 35 years of leadership experience at the highest levels of American business.  Mr. Anderson is a founder, owner and principal of three companies: Energy International, LLC which provides energy solutions to its customers; Lochborn Partners, LLC, a private equity and consulting firm; and Highland Capital Enterprises Corp., a consulting firm specializing in merchant banking transactions. Mr. Anderson previously served in senior corporate positions in business development, acquisitions, corporate strategy, and legal affairs at GATX Corporation, Inland Steel Industries, Inc., and American Hospital Supply.

Mr. Anderson holds a JD and a BA from the University of Minnesota, and a Masters of Law in Taxation from DePaul University. He is a member of the American Bar Association, in addition to the Illinois, Minnesota and Chicago Bar Associations.

Mr. Anderson is a member of the board of American Ecology Corporation and has served as Chairman of Chicago LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation), Chairman of the Council of Chief Legal Officers, Chairman of the Metro Ethics Coalition and as a Director for Advocate Health Care.
